President’s Welcome

Congratulations on becoming a student at the University of Dundee! This is the start of the best few years of your life, and becoming part of the Sports’Unionis a guaranteed way to make it even better!!

You are coming to Dundee at what is an extremely exciting time for sport both in the University and throughout the UK. With the countdown to London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 being well under way there has never been a more exciting time to get involved, whether you’re a budding athlete, a sporting fanatic or just want to get fit and make friends the Sports’ Union is the place for you.

We are incredibly proud to say that a number of Dundee University Sport athletes will be competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Winter Olympics in Sochi and we even have an athlete hoping to run at the Olympic Stadium during London 2012 in less than a years time. Many international athletes don’t even start their chosen sport until University so it’s never too late to get stuck in. You could be the next Steve Redgrave and you just don’t know it yet!

Don’t consider yourself to be an Olympic athlete? Don’t worry, such aspirations remain a distant dream for most of us (especially me!) but we still have a place for you. The University Sports’Union has 40 clubs ranging from Archery to Volleyball and Surf to Skydiving. All our clubs welcome all everybody whether you are a complete beginner, want to try your hand at a new sport, get fit or just make friends and enjoy the social side of sport.

Becoming a member of one our sports clubs is the best way to throw your self into University life and become part of Dundee’s close knit University community. Sport is also a fantastic way to make to friends at University, and they can be guaranteed to last much longer, with both the Sports’ Union and individual clubs holding regular social events.

The Sports’ Union works in partnership with the Institute of Sport and Exercise (ISE) in the delivery of Dundee University Sport to provide the best possible experience for students though club, team and campus sport.

Sporting achievement and participation is recognised and celebrated by the University annually with the blues and colours awards and ball. So there is something for everyone to work towards. The blues and colours ball is the highlight of the Sports’ Union social calendar so if you are a socialite this is a night not to be missed!

The Sports’ Union office is in the ISE and we operate an open door policy. We are run by students and love to hear what you have to say, so if you have any questions or just want to chew the fat about the sporting world, pop in and see us.

Your years at Dundee will fly by and I urge you to make the most of every opportunity available to you, especially in your first year. Good luck with your studies and all your sporting endeavours and I hope to see you throughout the year.
