Official Website of Dundee University Rucksack Club

Hill walking? Climbing? Mountaineering? If any of the above sounds like it’s your sort of thing then DURC is the club for you! The rucksack club is one of the biggest sports clubs within the University – and in fact one of the biggest outdoor clubs in the country – often with as many as 150 members. Consequently we have a wide variety of people in our ranks, from those interested in valley walks to munro-baggers, keen mountaineers and ice climbers and everything in between! Whatever your level of interest you’re bound to find someone within the club who shares your aspirations.

Never done this sort of thing before? No problem! The club has a wealth of experience that we are more than willing to share. This could be in the form our free introductory climbing sessions held at the indoor wall in Dundee, our annual Winter Experience meet or just having a chat whilst out on the hill or over a few pints in the pub.Whether you’re an experienced hill walker or climber looking to spread your wings or a complete beginner to the outdoors just interested in getting out there and seeing what Scotland (and further afield) has to offer, the rucksack club will offer you great opportunities for fun and adventure.

We run a trip (meet) every weekend, usually up north to the Highlands, as well as three weekend meets each semester. Meets usually cost £10 and £25 respectively, and include fuel, transport, accommodation and a meal on the weekends! We are open to all skill levels and interests, from those who want to try hiking or hill-walking for the first time to experienced hikers. Trip signups are at our social every Tuesday night at The Braes, downstairs area next to the toilets, on Perth road at 8pm.

We also meet once a week to climb at the local climbing wall, Avertical World, as well as running an introductory session in basic climbing skills at the start of the year. There is also the infamous European summer trip the club runs too! If you want to experience the beauty of hiking, hill-walking and climbing in the UK and further afield, this is the club for you!

Hillwalking, climbing and mountaineering aren’t the only things the club has to offer: there is also a very active social side to the club. We meet every Tuesday evening at 8pm in the downstairs areas of the Braes. This is an ideal place to catch up, swap stories, have a pint (or more) and find out what is happening at the weekend.

The club also organises a number of social events throughout the year, from meals to ceilidhs and weekends away. All in all a good mix for everyone, and if you think there’s something missing, we’re always open to suggestions!

Have a look at the dates page for all the events that we’ll be having this year.

Make sure that you join our Facebook group DURC Chat 2021/22 as this is the place where we make announcements.

You will need to matriculate with the club in order to hire gear from our gear store, sign up for trips and get a discount card for the Braes. Sign up is £35/year and £25/semester plus a £10 Sports Union fee. You can sign up here.
